be presented October 14, 15, 16, 2011, will be DEFIANCE by John Patrick
Shanley, author of the Pulitzer-Prize winner DOUBT. Both plays are drawn
from Shanley’s own experience, and both dramatize conflict within
longstanding institutions undergoing change. While DOUBT is set in the
Catholic Church during the 1960’s, DEFIANCE takes place at the Marine
Corps Base Camp Lejeune in 1971, as the Viet Nam War winds down.
Long-time career officer Colonel Littlefield and young African American
Captain King have their own ambitions and priorities, but both men are
also veterans of different battles that have left them scarred. The crux
of the story is a charge of misconduct against Littlefield, an
accusation that leads to profound questions about race, ethics, sexual
politics, loyalty, and authority. The director will be Yvonne Perry.
Auditions for DEFIANCE have been set for August 28 and 29th. See

presented February 17, 18, 19 2012, will be SIGHT UNSEEN, a 1992 work by
another winner of the Pulitzer Prize, Donald Margulies. The plot
concerns a successful American painter, Jonathan Waxman, who detours
from a London retrospective of his work to visit the lover he hasn’t
seen in fifteen years. She now lives in a spare farmhouse with her
archeologist husband. As the story moves backward and forward in time,
Waxman struggles to deal with his Jewish identity, as well as the
realization that fame has failed to liberate him not only from
insecurity, but also from fear that he has lost his way artistically.
Much like a painting, the play overflows with tantalizing ambiguities.
The director will be John Romeo.

Theater Voices third production,
to be presented March 30, 31, April 1, 2012, a recent Broadway hit,
will be announced shortly pending approval. The director will be David
Girard.

The final staged reading production to be presented, May
18. 19. 20, 2012, will be the recent Broadway hit, BLACK TIE by A.R.
Gurney. A comedy about how values change from generation to generation.
The play takes place on the eve of a wedding in a hotel in the
Adirondacks. The groom's family has arrived to prepare for the rehearsal
dinner downstairs and the father, Curtis, is slipping on his late
father's tuxedo, which he has had tailored for the occasion to honor
tradition. That's when a familiar spirit appears: It's Curtis' charming
father, who has been aroused from The Great Beyond by his loving son to
help write his wedding speech and for advice. Things do not go smoothly.
The director will be Judy Spevack

Theater Voices of Albany is a
