He later moved to Troy and was arrested to be returned to his owner. Harriett Tubman and a crowd of both white and black citizens rescued him and smuggled him to Watervliet where he was again captured and again rescued. Later the citizens of Troy paid $650 to gain his freedom from slavery and be reunited with his family.
