THE CHAIRS, a tragic farce

Directed by Linda Shirey
Assistant director: Phoebe Baker
Featuring: Marty Egan, Stephen Henel, and Anna Kroup

Originally written in 1952, and subtitled by the author as “a tragic
farce”, The Chairs is an absurdist play of the first order by a master
innovator of the genre. The premise: an elderly couple spend their time
collecting and inventorying chairs only to be overcome by the very
objects that give their lives meaning.

THE LESSON, a comic drama
Directed by Neilson Jones
Featuring: Lucy Breyer, Vivian Hwang, and John Schnurr

Written
in 1951, The Lesson illustrates Ionesco’s comic genius, where insanity
and farce collide as a professor becomes increasingly frustrated with
his hapless student, and the student with her mad teacher. This potent
"comic drama" has the power to frighten and delight as only Absurdist
plays can.
