THEIR 38<sup>TH</sup> SEASON: <i>THE COUNTESS</i><span style="font-style:normal">

The Ghent Playhouse will present</div>

<div class="MsoNormal">“The Countess” by Gregory Murphy. The play opens on Friday,

October 12th and runs through Sunday, October 28th.

Performances are Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes">  </span>Kate McCready Gulliver is directing the

<div class="MsoNormal">Based on one of the most notorious scandals of Victorian

England, <i>The Countess</i><span style="font-style:normal"> is a psychological

drama of madness, cruelty, and obsession, and perhaps one of the greatest love

stories of all times. In 1853, well-known art critic John Ruskin, his wife

Effie Gray, and his friend and protégé, the pre-Raphaelite painter John Everett

Millais, depart in high spirits for the Scottish Highlands. Millais plans to

paint a portrait of his mentor, whom he idolizes. When they return to London

four months later, Millais’s hatred for Ruskin is exceeded only by his passion

for the beautiful, young Mrs. Ruskin. The terrible truth at the heart of the

Ruskin marriage, which is gradually revealed through the persistence of Effie’s

friend Lady Elizabeth Eastlake, rocks London society and forever changes the

lives of Millais and the Ruskins. <o:p></o:p></span></div>

Ruskin, Anya Krawcheck as Effie Ruskin, Cathy Lee-Visscher as Lady Elizabeth

Eastlake, and Michael Meier as John Everett Millais. Ruskin’s parents are Glenn

Barrett as John Ruskin, Sr. and Lael Locke as his wife Margaret. Tracy Trimm

rounds out the cast as their servant Crawley.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<div class="MsoNormal">Gregory Murphy is a playwright and novelist with ties to

Columbia County. <i>The Countess</i><span style="font-style:normal">, his

first play, ran Off-Broadway for two years and was produced in London's West

End. His first novel, Incognito<span style="font-style:normal">,

was just published by Penguin Books.  He recently completed a second play,

</span><i>Household Word</i><span style="font-style:normal">s, about Charles

Dickens and is at work on a second novel, </span><i>Madison Squar</i><span style="font-style:normal">e.  He currently lives in New York City with his

wife, theater director Ludovica Villar-Hauser.   <o:p></o:p></span></div>
