<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify"><i><span style="font-family:'Lucida Grande'">A Lesson Before Dying </span></i><span style="font-family:'Lucida Grande'">is based on Ernest
J. Gaines' celebrated novel about life and justice in pre-civil rights
Louisiana. Set in the Louisiana backwoods in 1948<b><i>, </i></b>the play depicts the
story of two young black men. Jefferson, innocent prisoner awaiting execution,
insists that he will be dragged to the electric chair like a hog. Grant, a
schoolteacher, owing to a debt of honor, visits the young man in jail and helps
him to face his death with dignity. Together, each man learns the power of
love, compassion and individual heroism as Jefferson accepts freedom as a state
of mind.</span></p>
