An Immersive Hallowe’en Event with the Musicians of Ma’alwyck

Somebody is going to meet an untimely end. You’re there when it happens. And you’re called upon to discover who did it. “Murder in C Major” is a new, immersive murder-mystery event, specially devised for the Musicians of Ma’alwyck’s Hallowe’en fundraiser, and includes quite a few treats and plenty of tricks. It takes place at A Taste of Europe (3630 State Route 145, Cobleskill, NY), a restaurant renowned for its excellent and far-ranging cuisine.

Can violent felons be cured by music? Psychiatrist-conductor Cornwall Mellish believes so, and is presenting the proof of his research at this dinner party, featuring a performance by an ensemble of misfits. You know them as the Musicians of Ma’alwyck, who will perform music for the occasion, include Saint-Saëns bone-rattling “Danse Macabre” and the rarely heard Henry Russell classic “The Maniac.” Also in the evening’s musical fare will be Gerald Finzi’s eerie Clock of the Years.

You’re one of the psychiatrists in attendance, but you won’t need your DSM-5. You’ll be solving the mystery and identifying the killer by following the clues that point to a complicated series of relationships ... and a thirst for revenge! Before that, you and your fellow sleuths will sit down to a gourmet dinner prepared by chef Jeannette Balins. Who would want to miss Ghoulish Goulash, Devil’s Eggs, or Chicken-run-a-mock?

And then . . . well, and then it’s murder, and you’re going to help policeman-turned-psychiatrist Ainsley “Bulldog” Shepherd figure out who did it and why. There will be prizes for the three best solutions, including a gift certificate to A Taste of Europe, concert tickets, and more. And the satisfaction of knowing that you wouldn’t be caught dead in a situation like this.

Tickets are $100, and the price includes dinner and the murder-mystery event. A cash wine and beer bar is available. Attendance is strictly limited to 40 guests. Reservations are necessary and must be received by October 26. Reservations may be made on line at musiciansofmaalwyck.org or by calling 518-377-3623.

Byron Nilsson (writer, performer) last appeared with Musicians of Ma’alwyck performing the cantata Buxtehude’s Daughter, which he wrote with composer Tom Savoy. He was also seen as Father Luke when the ensemble revived The Poor Soldier a few years ago. Byron’s play Mr. Sensitivity was featured at the NY Fringe Festival, Drivers was seen at NY’s Ensemble Studio Theatre, and Humoresque recently had readings in the Hudson area, directed by Broadway veteran Bernie Kukoff. He is a member of the Dramatists Guild, Actors Equity, and SAG-AFTRA.
