Adored by his eccentric landlady, tolerated by her husband, and befriended by a local young woman, he otherwise lives in a self-imposed exile. He wishes desperately to be anywhere else, but ultimately has nowhere else to go. It is here that his former life catches up to him in the form of two sadistic figures named Goldberg and McCann. Not content to be subtle, they convince the landlady to throw Stanley a birthday party, and use it as a pretense to torture him with mind games. The subsequent action unfolds like a fever dream, with a mysterious beginning that speeds ruthlessly to a terrifying conclusion.
