Play Description:
The story of a friendship that develops over a 25-year period between Daisy
Werthan, an elderly Jewish widow living in Atlanta, and Hoke Coleburn, the
African American chauffeur her son hires for her. Set during the years of
the civil rights movement, the drama has been hailed for its quiet,
unsentimental examination of its elderly characters and for its balanced
depiction of gradually changing political sensibilities in the South. A
warm-hearted, humorous and affecting study of the unlikely relationship
between an aging, crotchety white Southern lady, and a proud, soft-spoken
black man.

Character Descriptions:
Daisy Werthan - plays (70+) Daisy is an independent, prickly former
schoolteacher who resents having her independence curtailed by her son’s
concerns. She grew up with less affluence than she currently has and is
uncomfortable with the change and very particular about her things and
spending money. Though she initially views Hoke as a symbol of the
limitations she does not want to accept, she eventually begins to trust him
and they become very close. Daisy starts the play 72 and is 97 when it
ends*.

Hoke Coleburn - plays (60+, African American) Hoke is a proud, kind man who
is hired to chauffeur Daisy around by her son. He tolerates Daisy’s
rudeness when he first comes to work for her and takes the responsibility
of looking after her seriously. Family is very important to Hoke. He
forgives Daisy for her previous behavior and they become very close. Hoke
starts the play 60 and is 85 when it ends*.

Boolie Werthan (40+) Boolie is Daisy’s busy, successful son. He is a
businessman who has taken over the family business and is much more
comfortable with the family’s wealth than his mother. He hires her a
chauffeur out of concern for her safety after an accident. Boolie is a
dutiful son and always comes when his mother needs help, but he has a busy
life and a very socially conscious wife. He and Hoke work together to take
care of Daisy. Boolie starts the play at 40 and is 65 when it ends*.

*While the characters age during the production, their physical appearance
will
not change dramatically.
