art catalogs in existence - he created some 900 paintings and 1100 drawings, all in the last ten years of his life. That we know of. But what if there are other paintings, lost or secreted, that we know nothing of? This is where the play begins - with one man obsessed with a rumored, never seen final portrait of Van Gogh, long lost; another man obsessed with turning the rumor into a marketable truth, by whatever means; and a third man with a conundrum - should he fulfill one man's fantasy and the other man's designs, by forging the portrait? INVENTING VAN GOGH is the story of all three men intertwined with the story of their parallel counterparts from the past - Gachet, Gaugin and Van Gogh himself. Set against the backdrop of a murder mystery, the play explores the mystery of the truth in art, the truth in artists and the truth we collectively invent in order to make sense of both.

<FONT
