eye-witness accounts and court transcripts, “The Triangle Shirtwaist Factory
Fire Project” is a dramatization of the worst industrial fire of it’s time, one
that ultimately led to sweeping reforms in worker’s rights and safety laws for
all. To many, it was the “9/11” of it’s time. As a dramatic piece, it is very
much like “The Laramie Project” and “The Trials of Oscar Wilde”. The play starts with the early garment
worker strikes of 1911, and then moves into the fateful day of the fire. Nine
actors perform the many characters involved in disaster, from those trapped
inside the building, to those who tried to help on the outside. The second act
then illustrates the courtroom battle that ensued between the victims and owners
of the factory. Think “Law
and Order” ... with bribed witnesses, jury manipulation and outrageous court
room testimony...except it is all based on facts. Each actor gets to play 4 roles. For
example, Actor 1 may play an Irish cop, a Jewish factory foreman, a leading
attorney and an eyewitness. Actress 1 may play a 16 year old Lithuanian factory
worker, an office accountant, a suffragette and a grieving mother.<SPAN
