Simon's puns and glib one-liners abound, but there's also an undertone of sadness and pain that shades the events being told. <BR><BR><B><I><SPAN style="FONT-WEIGHT: bold; FONT-STYLE: italic">The Good Doctor</SPAN></I></B> is set in <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:country-region w:st="on">Russia</st1:country-region></st1:place> in the late 1800s and is a two-act comedy consisting of five scenes in each act. The scenes are individual vignettes tied together by a narrator, the Writer, who represents Chekhov himself. By turns farcical, poignant, and blackly humored; the stories feature a wide range of characters: bureaucrats and Generals, oldsters looking for love, a father trying to help his son become a man, clever peasants and seducers. <o:p></o:p></SPAN></FONT></P></TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE></DIV>
