His songs explored facets of love, life, human foibles, war and death.<SPAN style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </SPAN>His work, however, was relatively unknown in <st1:country-region w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">America</st1:place></st1:country-region> until “Jacques Brel …… <st1:City w:st="on">Paris</st1:City>” opened in 1968 in <st1:State w:st="on">New York</st1:State>’s <st1:place w:st="on">Greenwich Village</st1:place>, and which featured 25 of Brel’s translated songs.<SPAN style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </SPAN>It was a “hot ticket”, and ran there for over four years to packed houses, after which it enjoyed strong receptions at such places as Carnegie Hall, <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:PlaceName w:st="on">Kennedy</st1:PlaceName> <st1:PlaceType w:st="on">Center</st1:PlaceType></st1:place>, and a number of capital cities around the world.<o:p></o:p></SPAN></div>
