alt="Text Box: LOTTIE WILTON - 30s-40s, an upper-class Hampstead housewife, with an active mind but no place to use it. A mental bumblebee, quietly challenging, coming into her own. She instigates the idea of going to Italy. When others ask, “Why?” her question is simply, “Why not?” She is stuck in a stifling marriage to Mellersh and craves excitement, love and fulfillment.
MELLERSH WILTON - 30s-40s, vain, self centered London solicitor, loves the sound of his own voice, making speeches, being in charge. He does have his vulnerable side, but can’t show it. Like everyone in the play, his façade begins to melt when he encounters the charms of Italy. He also has a great bit with a towel and a hot shower.
ROSE ARNOTT - 30s-40s, more reserved than Lottie but she also feels more trapped in her marriage. She feels betrayed by her husband, Frederick, and this is what ultimately sends her off to Italy. She soon discovers within herself a capacity for great warmth.
FREDERICK ARNOTT - 30s-40s, Jovial and also a philanderer. Frederick is sly and a great dissembler. Unbeknownst to Rose, he has been leading a secret life. We enjoy seeing him in a tight spot.
CAROLINE BRAMBLE - in her 20’S, on the outside, a vivacious flapper, living a charmed life. She is attractive, poised and elegant. But she is, in fact, profoundly bored with the shallowness of her life and desires to break out of the restrictive society of 1920s London.
ANTHONY WILDING - in his 20s, an artist. He is a comfortable loner, slightly eccentric. Charming but rather bookish. Acclaiming influence. He is British but speaks Italian well having grown up on the villa and absorbed the bohemian pleasures of the Mediterranean.
MRS. GRAVES - mid-60s. A fuddy-duddy. Comically fussy and overbearing. She appears trapped- if not entombed - in the past of Victoria and Edwardian society. She lives to agitate and disorient others and must always have things her own way. Ultimately very lonely and needy. She too falls under the spell of the villa.
CONSTANZA - will consider ages 20 -60 - Italian housekeeper. Salt of the earth. She has to put up with a lot in order to keep her British guest happy and to keep the villa running smoothly. A comic foil for Mrs. Graves. Knowledge of Italian language is a complete plus.
Also looking to cast several non-speaking roles. (Londoners, townspeople, servants, valets & Italian peasants) minimal rehearsal required.
