</span>All three roles require that the actors somehow look Italian or Mediterranean.</font></p>
<p style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 10pt" class="MsoNormal"><font size="3" face="Calibri">Ludovico Nota: An intellectual and successful novelist.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes">
</span>He is prone to speaking philosophically (and is at times the voice of Pirandello); charming, sophisticated, and a bit world weary, he is caught up in the tragic story of the play’s heroine, a former nanny whose charge died under her care.</font></p>
<p style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 10pt" class="MsoNormal"><font size="3" face="Calibri">Alfredo Cantavalle: “a self-important, Neapolitan journalist,” an early version of a paparazzo, who wrote the sensationalist article about the play’s heroine’s attempted suicide.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes">
</span>He is fast-talking, cynical, and self absorbed.</font></p>
<p style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 10pt" class="MsoNormal"><font size="3" face="Calibri">Senor Grotti: The Italian consul in Smyrna, Turkey, who was the play’s heroine’s former employer.
<span style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </span>(It was his child who died through the nanny’s neglect.)<span style="mso-spacerun: yes">
</span>“A dark, respectable-looking man” whose eyes and face “express tough, sober reserve.”
