Joseph Surface--Joseph is a 20 something-year-old man who has been very "moral" all of his life. He does not smoke, take snuff, or drink. Joseph has managed his own inheritance from his father very well. He expresses all of the appropriate sentiments of the day. Joseph appears (on the outside) to be a an upstanding young man. Despite his outward appearance of morality, Joseph often engages in gossip and slander, behind the backs of others. He is very critical of others, especially his brother Charles. Joseph is one of two suitors approved by Sir Peter to date Maria, who is Sir Peter's ward, and about to come into her own inheritance. Joseph pretends to love Maria, but what he really likes is Maria's money. Joseph believes he is being assisted by Lady Sneerwell to court Maria. However, while Sneerwell pretends to assist Joseph, she really favors his brother Charles.<o:p></o:p></b></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="font-size:12pt;"><b> </b></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="font-size:12pt;"><b>2. Charles Surface is a 30 something-year-old man who is a profligate rake. He drinks, is known to take snuff, and has gambled away most of his inheritance to date. Charles has also dated a number of young women and has had many short term love affairs. However, he does not engage in gossip or slander others. Charles is at heart a very kind person who is generous and loyal to his friends. He is also loyal to an uncle, whom he still regards with great affection, even though he has not seen him for a long time. Charles loves Maria very much but unfortunately has gambled away most of his inheritance from his father and therefore, is not in a position to marry Maria. Sir Peter does not think that Charles is an appropriate match for Maria and has forbidden Maria from seeing Charles. But she loves Charles very much and he loves her also. Charles has been seeing Maria secretly and is being secretly assisted in this by Lady Sneerwell.<o:p></o:p></b></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="font-size:12pt;"><b> </b></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="font-size:12pt;"><b>3. The third role is for an actor between the ages of 40 and 60 to play Crabtree. Crabtree is a wealthy gentleman who is the uncle of Sir Benjamin Backbite. (Sir Benjamin Backbite is the other suitor approved by Sir Peter to date Maria. She does not find Backbite attractive and thinks he's a pretentious bore.)
