<p class="MsoNormal"><b><span style="font-family:"Maiandra GD",sans-serif">Description:</span></b><span style="font-family:"Maiandra GD",sans-serif"> Pinkster was originally a religious holiday (<i>Pinksteren</i> or Pentecost) brought to the colonies by the
Dutch in the 17<sup>th</sup> century. During the 18<sup>th</sup> and early 19<sup>th</sup> centuries, the enslaved African and African-American communities were so successful at incorporating their own culture and traditions into the celebration that by the
early 1800’s, Pinkster was considered a holiday for the enslaved Black community. For enslaved men and women, this was the one time of year they were given time off from their unceasing labor.
