Spotlight Players Community Theater, of East Greenbush, is delighted to announce the performances of their summer musical spectacle, The Pirates of Penzance, June 11-14, at 8pm, at Columbia High School, 92 Luther Road, East Greenbush, NY, 12061. Much like recent Broadway productions of Sweeney Todd and Company, this show will not have an off-stage orchestra, but will instead feature characters that will play all of the instruments on stage. The production is co-directed by Michael Mensching, director of the sold out The Full Monty, Songs for a New World and Jane Eyre, and by playwright Brendan McDermott.
In the musical, The Pirates of Penzance the young pirate apprentice Frederick is about to be freed from his indentured period. The honorable Frederick, who was mistakenly apprenticed to the pirates by his partially deaf nursemaid Ruth, has decided to leave the pirate life. Now a free man, Frederick leaves for the shore. Frederick, who has never seen a woman besides Ruth, instantly falls in love with Mabel, one of the daughters of Major General Stanley. Soon though, the pirates arrive, and want to marry the rest of Major General Stanley’s daughters. Major General Stanley enlists the help of the police to stop the pirates. Frederick desires to help Major General Stanley and the police to help protect the ladies, but soon he discovers that due to a technicality, he is still bound by duty to remain an apprentice to the pirates. All is well in the end when it is discovered that the pirates have noble blood and would in fact be suitable husbands for Major General Stanley’s
daughters.
"We have been very fortunate to have some of the most creative musical talent in Capital District join this production,” said Mensching. “We have some of the best voices you are going to hear on stage, including several members of the Mendelssohn Chorus. And, the fact that some of these actor/singers are among the best piano players in the local musical theater community helps.” The production features several actors/singers/musicians, much like the award winning staging of the recent revivals of Sweeney Todd and Company. In those productions, the actors actually play the instruments on stage as part of a seamless production that integrates all of the aspects of the musical onstage. “It is really quite a daring and innovative staging approach, and gives us the opportunity to take a lot of risks,” said McDermott.
Spotlight Players is located in East Greenbush, and provides family entertainment for the entire community. “This is a family-friendly classic that is sure to entertain and delight all ages. The affordable price of $10 dollars makes this a very good bargain for live entertainment for a family night out,” said Ferne Dutkin, president of Spotlight.
