This futuristic, thought-provoking and almost science fiction tale centers around a boy named Jonas. On his 12th birthday, he and the other "Twelves" in his community are given their special assignments, which are based on the unique characteristics they have shown throughout the years. Jonas' assignment is to be the Receiver of Memories. He visits an old man named The Giver for training on his duties. Throughout this training The Giver transfers to Jonas the memories of the world's history, long since forgotten by common citizens of the community, whose daily lives are dictated by the rules of the Elders. At first Jonas enjoys the memories, as they are pleasant ones such as, sunshine, music, and love. Things take a turn for the worse when Jonas receives the memories of pain, hunger, and warfare. He experiences the worst pain and shock when he discovers what happens to those who break the rules three times and what happens to the old when they are no longer able to care for themselves. Jonas is forced to make a brave, yet painful, decision in order to release the memories to the entire community and to save himself from the secrecy, trials, and pain that a lifetime as the Receiver of Memories holds.
