This show looks to a reality in which all workers are automatons; their
attempted acquisition of souls and the resulting catastrophe make for a
powerful and deeply moving theatrical experience.

Years ago, on a distant island, Old Rossum discovered the secret to
artificial life. Now, his process has been perfected and Rossum's Universal
Robot factory mass produces artificial workers by the millions. The economy
is changing, and General Manager Harry Domin is drawing ever closer to his
dream of freeing mankind from the degradation of labor. He has assembled
the world's most brilliant scientist, psychologist, technician, accountant,
and builder; together they have become the industrial giants of the planet.
But everything changes the day that Helena Glory arrives at the RUR factory
representing an organization intent on providing equal rights for the
ever-growing Robot population. Domin is instantly smitten with the
beautiful idealist and proposes to her on the spot. Very soon, though,
their conflicting beliefs set in motion a chain of events that threatens to
destroy the world as we know it. Karel Capek makes a striking commentary on
politics, economy, prejudice, and war in his 1920s masterpiece. By
introducing the word "Robot" to the world, Capek led us all to redefine our
view of the nature of humanity and the ultimate destiny of mankind.
