The Heiress adapted by Augustus and Ruth Goetz from Henry James' short psychological novel 

Washington Square (1880) became a successful Tony-winning Broadway play (1947) starring 

Wendy Hiller, and then an equally successful Oscar-winning movie (1949) starring Olivia de Havilland,

 Montgomery Clift and Ralph Richardson.
