Dickens' A Christmas Carol
A Ghost Story of Christmas
Presenting the ultimate scary ghost story! Charles Dickens' beloved classic is told in a fresh way by the Schenectady Civic Players on December 5, 6 & 10-13 at 8 PM and matinees on Sundays, December 7 & 14 at 2:30 PM. With carolers singing period songs, over-sized puppets representing ghosts and plenty of chains rattling and special effects sounding, it's the perfect holiday season treat for everyone.
The story is the nightmare of a mean old man, visited by spirits and spooked into rediscovering what life's about. Set in Victorian London, where the privileged, in their fancy parlors, prosper while the poor struggle to survive. A Christmas Carol speaks to all ages as it tells the tale of the cynical Ebenezer Scrooge. With a heart hardened by a tragic childhood and lost love, Scrooge would rather Christmas never came around to disrupt his money-grubbing ways... until he gets a series of wake- up calls from the spirits of Christmas Past, Present, and Future. SCP's original production captures A Christmas Carol's enduring message of hope and redemption with evocative songs, sprightly dances, spectacular sets and magical stage effects.
The Cast
Produced by Duncan Morrison, A Christmas Carol is adapted and directed by Lloyd Waiwaiole. Melissa Brown is the assistant director. Musical direction is provided by Valerie A. Lord. The acting ensemble play multiple roles, sing, dance, play instruments and manipulate over-sized puppets. The cast includes: Sev Moro, Jonathan Savoy, Richard Roe, Tom Heckert, Byron Cortez, Claudia DeMartino, Eliza Jane Figueroa (and her mother Jane Figueroa), Sue Rucinski, Stephanie Insogna, Evan Russell, Alex Allwine, Will Whisenhurst, and features John Noble (recently of Cohoes Music Hall's Noises Off) as Scrooge.
Pictured are John Noble as Scrooge alone and John Noble with Will Whisenhunt as Tiny Tim with Claudia DeMartino and Jonathan Savoy as Belle and Young Scrooge in the background.
The Director
Lloyd Waiwaiole, costumer of the theater and dance department at Union College, created and directs this original play. His vision for this play includes his original puppet designs and Dickens' written words spoken by the cast. The play is true to the original spirit of the book but done in Lloyd's presentational story telling style. He says of the production, "This extremely talented cast is getting the job done beautifully with no backstage drama, in a nice community theater that's good for audiences and performers."
The music
Musical director Val Lord researched group choral songs popular in Victorian England and selected twenty little-known and seldom heard carols which are performed as part pf the play, in the spirit of strolling Victorian carolers of the season. Dickens wrote the book in the form of a carol and the producers added music as a tribute to Dickens.
