Hans Christian Anderson's tale of how the love of a child can melt the
coldest heart.

Snow Queen

Snow Queen is a wonderfully complex combination of human actors, puppets,
and a set made of boxes. The adaptability of the set allows the story to
travel from Copenhagen to the Snow Queen's Palace at the North Pole visiting
numerous lands along the way. The actors interact with a variety of puppets
that allow the story's numerous characters - animal, flowers, and the Sun -
to come to life and tell their portion of the story. The actors also use
simple costumes pieces to become other animals and people; including the
River, Crow, the Lap Woman and the Finn Woman.

Snow Queen is adapted from the Hans Christian Anderson tale by Steamer No.10
Theatre's artistic director Ric Chesser and directed by Eric Rose. The
roles of the Snow Queen, Gerda and the Sprite are played by Nicole Plyem,
Kai is played by Robert Rice, along with six other roles. The Narrator and
remaining five roles are played by Suzie Dunn.

Snow Queen Synopsis

The narrator relates the tale of the Snow Queen in seven stories. It begins
with the tale of a Sprite who creates a Magic Mirror that distorts
everything it reflects causing the observer to see only the worst of the
world; and when it shatters the particles are spread across the world.

Kai and Gerda, two children living in adjoining garrets high above
Copenhagen, hear the tale of the Snow Queen who rules snow flakes and her
Palace far to the North. Later Kai sees the Snow Queen out his window and
she seems to beckon to him. When they are playing Kai gets a speck of the
Magic Mirror in his eye and it travels to his heart which becomes cold and
freezes. That winter Kai is playing with his sled, grabbing on to sleighs
and carts and being pulled through town. He grabs onto an all white sleigh
and is drawn out of town where the Snow Queen invites him into her sleigh,
kisses him to protect him from the cold, and make him forget, then takes him
to her Palace.

Gerda goes in search of her friend Kai, has many adventures and is assisted
by numerous animals and people. Eventually she arrives at the Snow Queen's
Palace where she finds Kai. Her tears melt the ice in his heart and
dissolve the speck of Mirror, freeing him and restoring him to life.
