Experience the 3,000-year-old tradition of Carnatic music, the classical music of southern India, at several FREE upcoming events!

1) Performances with Vidya Subramanian, local Carnatic music teacher and nationally recognized vocalist in the genre:

- Sunday, Jan 17, 1:30 pm: Arts Center of the Capital Region, 265 River Street, Troy, NY (pre-concert talk at 1:00 pm). The ensemble will include vocalist Vidya Subramanian, Ravi Srinivasan on violin and Ganesh Sankaranarayanan on mridangam, a traditional Indian drum.

- Friday, Feb 12, 2010, 6 pm: Malta Community Center, 1 Bayberry Drive, Malta, NY

- Friday, Feb 19, 2010, 2 PM (school break week): Mechanicville Public Library, 190 N. Main Street, Mechanicville, NY

- Saturday, March 6, 2010, 4 pm: Historic Grooms Tavern, 290 Sugarhill Road, Rexford, NY

All events are free and open to the public.


2) FREE training course on Indian classical music at the Clifton Park-Halfmoon Public Library:

Sangeetham: A Journey into the Musical Heritage of India
FREE 6-session training course on Carnatic music
Instructor: Vidya Subramanian
Location: Clifton Park-Halfmoon Public Library
(Piracci Board Room, 1st floor)

Prior musical training is not required. Attendees may participate in optional singing training at the end of each session:

Session 1: Sat, Jan 16, 2010, 2 pm, Raga (melody) and Tala (rhythm)
Session 2: Sat, Jan 23, 2010, 2 pm, Compositions and Great Composers
Session 3: Sat, Jan 30, 2010, 2 pm, Carnatic Music and Spiritualism
Session 4: Sat, Feb 13, 2010, 2 pm, Improvisation in Carnatic Music
Session 5: Sat, Feb 20, 2010, 2 pm, How to Appreciate a Carnatic Music Concert
Session 6: Sat, Feb 27, 2010, 2 pm, More on Carnatic Concert Appreciation
(Note: Sessions 5 and 6 will include an audio/visual presentation)

This program is open to adults and children aged 10 and above. Attendees may register for one or multiple sessions. Although every session will be taught as an independent module, attendance at all sessions is highly recommended.
