*************************************************************************
  "THE PIRATES OF PENZANCE" returns to Schenectady Light Opera Company!
         (one of Gilbert and Sullivan's most popular comic operas)

                  (84th season opener - Oct 15-24th, 2010)

             {8pm: Thursday, Fridays & Saturdays - 2pm: Sundays}

 SLOC welcomes back light opera to its theater, The Pirates of Penzance.

The story concerns Frederic, who having completed his 21st year, is released from his apprenticeship to a band of tenderhearted pirates. He meets Mabel and the two fall in love. Frederic finds out, however, that he was born on Feb. 29, and so, technically, he only has a birthday each leap year.  His apprenticeship indentures state that he remains apprenticed to the pirates until his 21st birthday, and so he must serve for another 63 years. Mabel agrees to wait for him faithfully.

The Pirates of Penzance was the only Gilbert & Sullivan opera to have it's official premiere in the US(31 Dec 1879). SLOC is doing the updated version of this show that was revived on Broadway in 1980(Tony Award in 1981 for BEST REVIVAL). If you are a Gilbert & Sullivan purist, don't despair, this version is very true to the original.

Ross Snyder(Director) & Richard Lenehan(Producer/Set Builder) have assembled a talented group of SLOC veterans and new members: Ryan Sperry(Frederic), Amy Shake(Mabel), Nancy Stone(Ruth), Richard Mazzaferro(Pirate King), Michael Murphy(Major General), Kara Cregin(Edith), Margaret Van Norden(Isabel), Megan Culbert(Kate).
