SUMMER ON-STAGE
Ages 9–16*
July 11 – 29
Monday – Friday, 9 am – 4 pm**
Do you love being on stage? Are you a “real character?” Come
join the unique culture that is Summer On-Stage for an exciting
three-week program in the performing arts with fellow theatre
kids and a staff of talented thespians. This year’s theme is “New
Beginnings.”
»»Enjoy a daily acting class and a variety of special topics
including singing, dance, stage combat, circus arts, costumes,
scene painting and stage lighting.
»»Focus on a presentational piece of your choice, co-created
with one of our teaching artists, that will debut on the final day
of the program.
Bring your character to life at Summer On-Stage 2011: New
Beginnings.
Tuition: $600***
* apprenticeships and internships are available for older students
** extended care from 8-9 am and/or 4-5 pm is available for an additional cost
*** tuition includes program T-shirt and afternoon juice break; daily lunch can be
ordered for additional cost
Summer On-Stage is directed by Sara Melita, Teacher/
Artist-in-Residence with the Theatre Institute at Sage.
She is the former Theatre Arts School and Intern Program
Director at the New York State Theatre Institute and
adjunct professor at The Sage Colleges.
Ms. Melita is a NYS Certified Teacher in Theatre Arts, holds an
M.A. in Educational Theatre from New York University and a
MBA from the University at Albany (anticipated May 2011). She
has performed in professional, community and college theatre
productions for more than 30 years.
SUMMER SHAKESPEARE INSTITUTE
Ages 14–18
July 25 – August 19
Monday – Friday, 9 am – 4 pm
“Out of my sight, thou doth infect my eye!”
Now that’s an insult.
This four-week performance-intensive program is designed
for teens to explore the visceral excitement of Shakespeare’s
comedies and tragedies. Beginning with a foundation of vocal
technique and scene study, then incorporating physical comedy
and knock-down, drag-out sword fights, students will receive
daily instruction and have the opportunity to tackle some
of Shakespeare’s most exciting scenes. The experience will
culminate with a series of public performances.
Tuition: $800
Summer Shakespeare Institute is directed by David
Bunce, Teacher/Artist-in-Residence with the Theatre
Institute at Sage. He was a Teacher/Artist with the New
York State Theatre Institute for 27 years and resident
combat instructor and choreographer.
Mr. Bunce has performed in London’s West End, Off Broadway,
Moscow, Sweden, Italy, the Mid-East, and on television, film
and on radio. He is a member of Actors Equity, United University
Professions and the Society of American Fight Directors and in
addition to NYSTI, has taught and choreographed stage combat
at Sage, Capital Repertory Theatre, the University at Albany,
Schenectady County Community College and Siena College.
