University at Albany Theatre Dept.'s last graduating class
forms Square One Productions.
Square One Productions, an Albany based company comprised entirely of SUNY Albany Theater Dept. Alum, the department’s last class, is producing the drama comedy The Lion In Winter by James Goldman, directed by Charity Buckbee. Having left the security of academia they have moved out into the world and on to square one of life’s chessboard. The Lion In Winter is a 1966 play depicting the personal and political conflicts of Henry II of England, his wife Eleanor of Aquitaine, their children and their guests during Christmas, 1183.
King Henry II of England has three sons by Eleanor of Aquitaine: Richard, Geoffrey, and John. He wants the kingdom to stay united after his death, but all three sons want to rule and it is likely to be torn apart by revolution. Henry favors the youngest John, while Eleanor favors the eldest, Richard. Middle son Geoffrey hopes to play both ends against each other and come out on top. Henry would like to have another heir by his mistress Alais, but that would only add to the confusion. Uneasy is the head on which the crown lies, and uneasy the truce between a matchless king and queen.
Often revived, this play was the basis of the Oscar-winning film which starred Peter O'Toole and Katharine Hepburn. Performances will take place at Steamer No.10 Theatre, 500 Western Ave. Albany, NY. Show dates are June 14th, 15th, 21st, and 22nd at 8 pm and 16th and 23rd at 3pm. Tickets are $10.
Square One productions The Lion in Winter is presented as part of Steamer No.10’s Eclectic Performance Series.
