SCHENECTADY CIVIC PLAYERS
ANNOUNCES ITS 2013-2014 SEASON
Schenectady Civic Players, the Capital District's longest-running, continually operating theater, announces the following five main stage productions for its 2013-2014 upcoming 86th season, opening in October at its 12 South Church Street playhouse in Schenectady's historic Stockade district.
BOOK OF DAYS by Lanford Wilson. Directed by Matthew Moross.
(Performance Dates: October 18-20 & 23-27, 2013)
When murder roars through a small town, Ruth Hoch begins her own quest to find
truth and honesty amid greed, lies, jealousy and religion. The play propels you through the evening like a page-turning mystery. "Wilson's best work since Fifth of July...an intriguing and thoroughly engrossing depiction of contemporary small-town life with a murder mystery at its core....a splendid evening of theatre." - Variety
THE SANTALAND DIARIES by David Sedaris, adapted by Joe Mantello. Directed by Duncan Morrison.
(Performance Dates: December 6-8 & 11-15, 2013.)
An unemployed actor decides to audition for the part of Crumpet the Elf at Macy's during the holiday crunch. At first the job is only humiliating, but once thousands of children start pouring through Santa's Workshop he becomes battle weary and bitter, entertaining us with stories of naughty children and pushy parents, empowered elves and sloshed Santas. "A delightfully thorny account of working as a Yuletide elf at Macy's. Priceless observations, both outrageous and subtle. Destined to hold a place in the annals of American humor writing." - The New York Times
SHERLOCK HOLMES; THE FINAL ADVENTURE by Steven Dietz.
Based on the original 1899 play by William Gillette and Arthur Conan Doyle.
Directed by Aaron Holbritter.
(Performance Dates: January 24-26 & 29-February 2, 2014.)
In this spirited, fast-moving and thoroughly theatrical adaptation, Dietz
presents Holmes at the height of his powers surrounded by all the elements that fans of
his exploits have come to expect: intrigue, danger, wit, humor and surprise.
"Dietz creates interesting worlds in his adaptations, in this case conjuring Victorian England and Holmes' flat at 221B Baker Street. In his script, Dietz has crafted enough intrigue, adventure and even romance to create a fun evening that moves quickly, and is sure to please everyone who joins in the game." - BackStage
THE UNDERSTUDY by Theresa Rebeck. Directed by Mark Stephens.
(Performance dates: March 21-23 & 26-30, 2014.)
Franz Kafka's play is the hilarious setting for Theresa Rebeck's exploration of
the existential vagaries of show business. Personal and professional lives collide.
"The Understudy delivers a clever indictment of contemporary theatre while making the
characters' personal circumstances ever more Kafkaesque. They are no more in control of the forces of celebrity, art, money, and Broadway than they are of their own fates."-The New Yorker
ROOM SERVICE by John Murray and Allen Boritz. Directed by Chris Foster.
(Performance Dates: May 2-4 & 7-11, 2014.)
A nimble-witted producer, living on credit in a Broadway hotel, is desperately in need of a big hit. By chance and good luck, he finds a playwright with a good play and a backer with $15,000. In the course of a few short days, he must deal with an odd assortment of actors, the hotel manager, the playwright and the angel with the money. "The President, Room Service, Lend Me a Tenor and Noises Off are perhaps the funniest plays of all time." - Bennington Banner
