GHENT PLAYHOUSE’S FINAL PRODUCTION OF THE 2013-14 SEASON “JOHN STEINBECK’S THE GRAPES OF WRATH”
The Ghent Playhouse will present “John Steinbeck’s The Grapes of Wrath”, the classic saga of displaced heartland Americans during the Dust Bowl Depression. Performances dates are May 23-25, May 30-June 1 and June 6-8. The novel was adapted for the stage by Frank Galati and the Steppenwolff Theater Company. This production is being directed by Joe Phillips.
Renowned first as a novel, and then as a prize-winning motion picture, the story of the Joad family and their flight from the dust bowl of Oklahoma is familiar to most. Desperately proud, but reduced to poverty by the loss of their farm, the Joads pile their few possessions on a battered old truck and head west for California, hoping to find work and a better life. Led by the indomitable Ma Joad, who is determined to keep the family together at any cost, and by the volatile young Tom Joad, an ex-convict who grows increasingly impatient with the intolerance and exploitation which they encounter on their trek, the Joads must deal with death and terrible deprivation before reaching their destination – where their waning hopes are dealt a final blow by the start realities of the Great Depression. And yet, despite the anguish and suffering that it depicts, the play becomes in the final essence a soaring and deeply moving affirmation of the indomitableness of the human spirit, and of the essential goodness and strength which – then as now – resides in the hearts and minds of the “common man” throughout the world. 2014 is the 75th anniversary of the publication of “The Grapes of Wrath.”
The cast is as follows: Tom Joad (Kevin Barhydt), Sally McCarthy (Ma Joad), Ken Goldfarb (Pa Joad), Tom Detwiler (Rev. Jim Casey), Nellie Rustick (RosaSharon), Michael Meier (Connie), Paul Murphy (Floyd), Sophia Raup (Ruthie Joad), Dana Berntson (Grandpa Joad and Camp Director), Sam Reilly (Al Joad), Barbara Smith (Grandma Joad), Mark Wilson (Uncle John), Alex Jones (Noah Joad), Robert Walker (Muley), Margo Phillips (Elizabeth Sandry), Sally Dodge (Mrs. Wainwright), Christinelee Mackerer (Aggie) and Ed Countermine – who with many of the players listed above are in the ensemble.
The production staff are Cathy Lee Visscher (Producer), Brendan Conroy (Set Designer), Jason Goldman (Lighting Designer), Joanne Maurer (Costume Designer), Mark Schane-Lydon (Special Effects), Arielle Lant (Assistant to the Director), and Paul Leyden (Production Stage Manager).
The Ghent Playhouse is located at 6 Town Hall Place – just off Route 66 in the town of Ghent in Columbia County, New York.
Performances are May 23 – June 8, Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sunday matinees at 2 p.m. Tickets are $18 ($15 for Friends of the Ghent Playhouse) and $10 for students with correct identification.
