*A Lesson Before Dying *by Romulus Linney is based on Ernest J. Gaines'
celebrated novel about life and justice in pre-civil rights Louisiana. Set
in the Louisiana backwoods in 1948*, *the play depicts the story of two
young black men. Jefferson, innocent and awaiting execution, insists that
he will be dragged to the electric chair like a hog. Grant, a
schoolteacher, owing to a debt of honor, visits the young man in jail and
helps him to face his death with dignity. Together, each man learns the
power of love, compassion and individual heroism as Jefferson accepts
freedom as a state of mind.
