The Importance of Being Earnest, A Trivial Comedy for Serious People was
first performed on 14 February 1895 at the St James's Theatre in London.

The Importance of Being Earnest is a comedy of manners focused on the
exploits of Jack Worthing and Algernon Moncrieff. Set in West Harlem circa
1900 in this production, the two Howard graduates enjoy the social life of
New York City. Hilarious conflicts ensue when Jack (or Earnest as he is
known in the city) pursues the love of Algernon’s cousin, the lovely Miss
Gwendolen Fairfax despite the stern disapproval of her mother the
formidable Lady Bracknell. Earnest (or Jack) attempts to juggle a second
life in the Schenectady countryside protecting his innocent ward Cecily
Cardew who is under the tutelage of Miss Prism and the protection of the
Reverend Canon Chasuble. As Jack’s (or Earnest’s) two worlds merge, the
result is a lowbrow comedy on the highest level.
