Creative License, the Capital Region’s newest Theater Collective, is
pleased to present its second production: “Dog Sees God: Confessions of a
Teenage Blockhead” at the Albany Barn, May 29 - June 13. This dark and
emotional comedy by Bert V. Royal won the Excellence Award from the 2004
NYC Fringe Festival and has been a hit for small companies around the
country.

CB, a quietly popular High School Student is mourning the loss of his
beloved beagle. As he struggles with his loss, he searches for solace and
answers among his lifelong friends, a viciously toxic clique of
self-absorbed, substance abusing teens. His quest steers him towards a
former friend and current outcast, and sparks something in CB that will
alter the course of his life, and that of his gang of friends, inexorably.

“Dog Sees God was an easy choice for our sophomore production,” says
Creative License co-founder Aaron Holbritter and the show’s director. “It’s
contemporary, tackles some important issues (substance abuse, bullying,
sexual identity) in a way that is still entertaining, and will challenge
audiences with it’s frank and often profane look at the lives of teenagers.
This is most definitely NOT an all-ages show.”

If the character’s, like CB, Van, Tricia and Marcy, seem familiar, that’s
because the play is an “unauthorized parody” of Charles Schultz’s “Peanuts”
comic strip and cartoons. “Not only is it a rather brilliant comic device,”
says Holbritter, “but it’s also a clever way to bring the audience along on
this journey. It doesn’t take long to figure out who’s who, and because we
realize that we knew and loved these character’s as elementary schoolers,
we’re instantly invested, and more likely to be sympathetic of their
sometimes abhorant behavior as teens.”

The company’s producing partner and venue, also plays a big part in the
show. Because the Albany Barn is located in the former St. Joseph’s school,
Holbritter decided to use as much of the building as possible, staging
scenes not only on the stage but on the auditorium floor as well is in the
balcony that overlooks the performance space. “The building,” he says, “
for all intents and purposes, is our set.”

Creative License is also playing a major part in the Barn’s spring
fundraiser #Throwback Thursday on May 28th. “With Creative License taking
the lead on curating live performances to include storytelling, stand up
comedy, dance, improv, and a preview of their own ‘sophomore’ production- Dog
Sees God,” says Barn Executive Director Kristen P. Holler, “the evening
promises to be one you won’t soon forget.”

“Dog Sees God: Confessions of a Teenage Blockhead” opens Friday May 29th
and runs Friday and Saturday evenings through June 13th at the Albany Barn,
56 Second Street, Albany. Showtime is at 7:30pm. The production runs
approximately 100 minutes, without intermission.
