Ding, Dong! The Old Year’s Dead!
Byron Nilsson and Malcolm Kogut in Cabaret Performance

Help us put this year out of its misery by subjecting yourself to a
program of songs and stories guaranteed, if not to bring a smile to your
face, at least to crinkle your lips into a wry grin. “Songs to Amuse,”
the duo of actor-singer Byron Nilsson and Malcolm Kogut, keyboardist,
presents a New Year’s Eve program titled “Ding, Dong! The Old Year’s
Dead” with not a single holiday song on tap.

It takes place at 7:00 PM at Albany’s Steamer No. 10 Theatre (500
Western Avenue), costs a mere $15 – you’ll spend more on champagne if
you know what’s good for you - and finishes early enough to send you
back out into the cold to find a more satisfying party to finish the
night with.

But at least you’ll have the sounds of Tom Lehrer’s “The Irish Ballad,”
Noël Coward’s “Uncle Harry,” and a complete, full-body rendition of
“Lydia, the Tattooed Lady” ringing in your ears. Not to mention oddball
Victorian-era ballads, temperance songs like “Father’s a Drunkard and
Mother Is Dead,” a rather coarse number titled “The Butler’s Song” that
suggests more than you ever wished to know about Dolores Del Rio, and
timeless ditties by Flanders & Swann.

It’s a literate, witty show, but don’t let that scare you. It’s also
funny as hell. Nilsson and Kogut have proven themselves at venues like
Caffe Lena, the Van Dyck, Mohonk Mountain House, the Otesaga Hotel, and
other places where the swells hang out. They also participated in the
first First Nights that Albany held, and like to think that this
performance gives you all the diversity of a First Night without asking
you to freeze your butt off going from place to place.

Ring in the new year by driving the old one to a well-deserved death:
“Ding, Dong! The Old Year’s Dead!” Laughter, song, and some comestible
surprises. Call Steamer No. 10 at 518-438-5503 to reserve tickets, or go
