“THE EXPLORERS CLUB”, A FREE-WHEELING FARCE AND WITTY SPOOF,
OPENS JANUARY 29 AT SCHENECTADY CIVIC PLAYERS

SCHENECTADY – The Explorers Club, a free-wheeling farce and witty spoof of bold Victorian adventurers by Nell Benjamin, and directed by Mark Stephens, opens Friday, January 29 and runs through Sunday, February 7 at Schenectady Civic Players’ 12 South Church Street playhouse in Schenectady’s historic Stockade district.

The location is London, 1879. The prestigious Explorers Club is in crisis: their acting president wants to admit a woman, and their bartender is terrible. True, this female candidate (played by Cristine M. Loffredo) is brilliant, beautiful, and has discovered a legendary Lost City, but the decision to let in a woman could shake the very foundation of the British Empire. Grab your safety goggles for some very mad science involving deadly cobras, irate Irishmen and the occasional airship. Time Out NY calls it “two parts Blackadder, a dash of Shaw, shake wildly, and garnish with fresh feminist ire.”

The Civic Player’s cast features Jeff Lurie (as Lucius Fretwell), Cristine M. Loffredo (as Phyllida Spotte-Hume/Countess Glamorgan), Nick Muscatiello (as Harry Percy), Joel A. Bramer (as Luigi), Jason Biszick (as Professor Cope), Phil Sheehan (as Professor Sloane), Tom Heckert (as Professor Walling), Michael Schaefer (as Sir Bernard Humphries), and Randy McConnach (as Beebe/Irish Assassin).

The Explorers Club runs Friday, Saturday and Sunday (January 29, 30 and 31) and Wednesday through Sunday (February 3 through 7). Wednesday and Thursday curtains are at 7:30 pm; Fridays and Saturdays at 8 pm; and Sundays are matinees only at 2:30 pm.
