CLASSIC THEATER GUILD EXAMINES LOVE WITH “CRIMES OF THE HEART”

SCHENECTADY NY -- Classic Theater Guild examines the endlessly rich topics
of love and family with their production of Beth Henley’s “Crimes of the
Heart”, opening on February 20th . Six performances will be held in the
theater space at Congregation Beth Israel, near Upper Union and Balltown
Road.

The production is directed by John Birchler, a veteran director and actor
with nearly 40 productions under his belt. “I saw the movie when it first
appeared in theaters in 1986, and being a fan of Southern Gothic, I loved
it. I’ve never seen another production of the show, although I directed one
in Johnstown’s Colonial Little Theatre in 1999.” The film won acclaim for
its quirky story and the presence of three outstanding actresses, Jessica
Lange,
Diane Keaton, and Sissy Spacek.

The story, which reviewer Robert Ebert called “a comedy about serious
matters”, centers around the three Magrath sisters, at home in Hazelhurst,
Mississippi circa 1974. Lenny, Meg and Babe deal with a dark family
history, ailing relatives, an interrupted singing career, questionable love
lives, and the crisis of the moment: Babe’s attempted murder of her husband
via a bullet to the stomach.

Christine Vermilyea (Lenny), Joelle Malinowski (Meg) and Audrey Vermilyea
(Babe) each bring diverse community theater experience to the table, from
Mary Poppins to Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? to Les Miserables. They are
joined by a versatile supporting cast: Marquis Heath
as lawyer Barnette Lloyd, tasked with defending Babe; Joey Cook as former
flame Doc Porter, and Hannah Jay as the meddlesome cousin, Chick Boyle.

The team is completed by expert production by Classic Theater Guild
president, Steve Suriano, and Stage Manager Seana Munson, a frequent CTG
collaborator.

Classic Theater Guild was established in 2004, and draws its cast, crew,
and Board members from Albany, Schenectady, Troy and surrounding towns.

While Congregation Beth Israel is the most frequent location of CTG’s
productions, other common locations are the Addy Theater and the Fenimore
Gallery, both part of the Proctors complex.

Six performances of “Crimes of the Heart” will be held: opening night,
Thursday February 20 at 7:30PM; Saturday February 22 at 7:30PM; a matinee
on Sunday February 23 at 3PM; and a repeat of that schedule the
following week. General admission tickets are $20, or $18 for Seniors,
students, or military. Discounted rates are available for groups of 10 or
more. Tickets may be purchased online through
CTGcrimes.brownpapertickets.com.

Congregation Beth Israel has ample parking and is handicapped accessible.
