of Arturo Ui

In 1941, playwright Bertolt Brecht was living in Finland waiting for a visa
to enter the United States. He had fled his native country of Germany to
escape the atrocities being committed by Adolf Hitler, a man he
disparagingly referred to as der Anstreicher (“the house painter”). It was
there that he wrote a biting satire about the stupidity, cowardice, and
greed behind the ideology that devastated his homeland. He titled the play
The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui. Instead of Nazi Germany, the play told
the story of ruthless Chicago gangsters running a “protection” racket on a
Cauliflower Trust. In place of Adolf Hitler, the show introduced us to
Arturo Ui, a distinctly American fascist. This funny, tragic, and
uncomfortably timely tale will both entertain and unsettle anyone fortunate
enough to buy a ticket.

Featuring unique audio and visual effects, this intimately staged
production directed by Linda D. Shirey is a can’t miss for Capital District
audiences!

Opening tonight! "The Resistible RIse of Arturo Ui" runs December 2-4 and
8-11, with 7:30 performances on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays, and 2:00
Sunday matinees. All performances will take place at The Albany Masonic
Hall, 67 Corning Place, Albany, NY 12207.
