Confetti Stage is proud to continue our tradition of supporting original
works by local playwrights with our first Writers Showcase.
Hearing a script read and getting feedback from a cast and audience are
invaluable parts of the workshop process. As such, we are excited to
present a staged reading of three scripts in progress:
"The Familiars" by Adele Costa
An Irish village in the year 1183. When a mysterious stranger murders her
beloved cat, tavern keeper Taryn doesn’t take it lying down. In confronting
the culprit however, Taryn realizes things are not always as they appear.
Sometimes the predator is prey, prey is the predator, and bloody deeds are
one of God’s most effective instruments.
"The Last Women's Health Clinic in North Dakota" by Beverly Skoll
It’s 2022. SCOTUS has overturned Roe v Wade. The Clinic, in Fargo, is
presently operating per usual but will be forced to close in about 5 weeks.
Tammi, who has devoted her life to running the clinic, is in search of a
building over the state border into Minnesota, where abortion will remain
legal. As Tammi tries to maintain some sense of sanity in the daily
operation of the clinic, she is faced with a very unexpected client. Their
encounter is eye opening.
"Period Three" by Joe Bruton
A typical teacher with some humor hears a noise and investigates during
period three. It was two shots from a shotgun in the hallway. The principal
tackles the student as the teacher returns to the classroom and evacuates
his kids. He stops at several other classrooms as well, the main office and
finally a last classroom, where they pile desks in front of the door. The
teacher borrows a cell phone and calls his wife. The next day he listens to
the principal’s account of the shooting and asks a counselor to help in
period three. The students are grateful and present an award and a card.
The teacher evaluates his decisions and explains a dream he had, and once
again evaluates his actions and his guilt.
Performances will be January 24-26 at the Albany Masonic Temple, with shows
at 7:30 on Friday and Saturday and a 2:00 Sunday matinee.
As feedback plays a crucial role in the playwriting process, audiences will
be invited to attend a talkback session with the playwrights following the
performance on Friday, January 24.
Tickets are available by donation, with a suggested donation of $15.
