The New York Writers Institute SUNY Albany is offering a free workshop, open
to the general public, on Adapting Literary Works for the Stage and Screen.
Prior experience is desirable but NOT required. The workshop is scheduled for 12
Monday evenings from Sept. 20 through December 6, 2004, from 6-9PM. The
instructor is W. Langdon Brown, Associate Professor of Theater, who was recently
granted permission from Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist Richard Russo to do a
stage adaptation of the novel, Mohawk. The workshop may be taken as a noncredit
course (no cost), or for undergraduate credit at the University at Albany (at
normal
cost). The application deadline is Aug 25 by mail and Aug 30 at 4PM in
person. No faxes or emails will be accepted.
The New York State Writers Institute is a state-sponsored literary arts

Thurs. Sept. 30, 7PM: Peter Sheridan, noted Irish playwright, founder of
Dublin's leading avant-garde theater, director of the film Borstal Boy
(2000), brother of Oscar-winning director Jim Sheridan, will speak about his
first novel in the Recital Hall of the Performing Arts Center at the
University at Albany's uptown campus. He will also give an informal seminar
at 4:15 in Humanities 354 at the University at Albany's uptown campus.
Friday, October 22, 7PM: Neil LaBute, controversial director of plays and
films. Films have included In the Company of Men (1997), as well as The
Shape of Things (2003), Possession (2002), Nurse Betty (2000), and Your
Friends and Neighbors (1998), will talk about his work following a screening
of The Shape of Things at Page Hall on the University at Albany's downtown
campus. He will also give an informal seminar at 4:15 in the Recital Hall of
the Performing Arts Center at the University at Albany's uptown campus.
Friday, November 12, 8PM: Roddy Doyle, major Irish novelist who adapted his
novels for the screen, including The Commitments, The Snapper, and The Van,
will talk about his work at Page Hall on the University at Albany's downtown
campus. Prior to the event, on Thurs. Nov. 11, we will screen The Van in the
same location. Doyle will also give an informal seminar at 4:15 in the
Recital Hall of the Performing Arts Center at the University at Albany's
uptown campus.
