Auditions for Ghent Playhouse Season Opener
Auditions for the first Ghent Playhouse production of the 2005-2006 season, Michele Lowe's dark comedy "The Smell of the Kill," will be held August 8 and 9 at the Playhouse. Sign-ins will start at 7 p.m., auditions at 7:30 p.m. The play will run three consecutive weekends beginning October 7.
Directed by Playhouse veteran Bernardine Handler, who brought the popular comedy "Art" to the Ghent stage two seasons ago, "The Smell of the Kill" takes a look at the marriages of three couples who get together once a month for dinner. Initially, these long-standing relationships seems stable, even a bit dull, but as the women chat in the kitchen after the meal we learn of the bizarre realities lurking beneath the surface. How the women choose to deal with their situations propels the play to its startling conclusion, with many laughs along the way.
"The Smell of the Kill" has a cast of six. The three women, all on stage for most of the play, are in their mid-30's to around 40:
· The hostess, Nicky, a working mother with a baby, is outspoken and somewhat cynical.
· Debra is righteous, loyal and not easily persuaded to compromise her convictions.
· At first Molly comes across as wide-eyed and a little naïve, but after a few drinks she loosens up considerably.
The audience never sees the husbands until the curtain call, but they have quite a bit to say to their wives from offstage. Thus they will be cast primarily for their voices. Two are somewhat macho, the third more gentle and needful.
One of the region's oldest and most popular non-equity theaters, the Playhouse is located in the hamlet of Ghent, just off Route 66, across from the fire station. For more information, call the box office at (518) 392-6264 or visit the website at www.ghentplayhouse.org.
