Schenectady Civic Players Announce Auditions for William Shakespeare's THE
TEMPEST
Auditions for William Shakespeare’s The Tempest will be held on
Tuesday, June 14 and Thursday, June 16 at 7:30 p.m. in the Playhouse, 12 South
Church Street in Schenectady. Registration for auditions begins at 7:00 p.m. each
night. The production will be directed by Richard Michael Roe.
Often seen as the playwright's farewell to the theatre world, Shakespeare's
The Tempest reveals a world of illusions and magic—where an angry sorcerer
manipulates spirits and humans alike in his search for revenge.
Banished to an abandoned island by his power-hungry brother, the Duke of
Milan, Prospero seizes his opportunity for retribution in a powerful storm that
shipwrecks the Duke and his nobles on the island. The story of a man who
realizes that the sole way to regain his humanity is to relinquish his omnipotent
control, The Tempest is a powerful tale that unites Shakespeare's
celebrated themes of love, man's vulnerability and forgiveness.
This production of The Tempest will have a classic movie twist. The
production will be designed and staged as an homage to the great Italian director
Federico Fellini, a master storyteller and visionary, using ideas from his
classics “Juliet of the Spirits,” “La Dolce Vita” and “Amacord”. It will
incorporate masks, mod clothing, magic and the music of Nino Rota.
AVAILABLE ROLES:
Alonso - King of Naples, 40-60.
Sebastian - Alonso’s brother, 40-60.
Prospero - Duke of Milan and sorcerer of the island, late 30’s to 50’s.
Antonio - Prospero’s brother and the “villain”, 30-50.
Ferdinand - Alonso’s son and the young hero, 20’s.
Gonzalo—a courtier, 40-60.
Caliban - an island creature, half man and half fish, age open.
Trincula - a female (director’s choice) clown, age open.
Stephano - a drunken butler, age open.
Miranda - Prospero’s daughter, 18-25.
Ariel - a spirit and Prospero’s servant, male or female, age open.
Also needed: 4-6 multiple part playing actors and actresses, age open, to
play sailors, nymphs, and other roles. These parts are the most “theatrical,”
and exceptionally important.
Auditioners should look over the script before auditions. Prepared
monologues are gratefully entertained. Any experience with dance, tumbling,
acrobatics and stage combat is welcome. Actors will also be integral in creating
their own masks/characters for some of the fantasy creatures...so an imagination
will help!
Performance dates are October 21-23 and 26-30, 2005. For more information
about auditions contact director Richard Michael Roe at 881-3867.
