Auditions for SCP’s final show of the season, Joe DiPietro’s Over the
River and Through the Woods, will be held on Tuesday, February 28 and Thursday,
March 2 starting at 7:00 p.m. at the Playhouse located at 12 S. Church Street
in Schenectady, NY.

Over the River and Through the Woods is a heartwarming comedy that revolves
around two sets of aging, first- generation, Italian-American grandparents
and Nick, their 29-year-old, single grandson, an executive on a fast career
track. Nick is about to announce a job promotion which would move him to the
other side of the country and away from the weekly Sunday dinners so lovingly
prepared and fiercely cherished by his grand-parents. This news sends the
grandparents into a frenzy of hilariously misguided schemes designed to keep Nick
from abandoning his "la famiglia." Nick, on the other hand, struggles to
balance his Italian heritage and loves his grandparents with his sense of
individuality. An unending supply of lasagna, provolone and mozzarella sandwiches
fuel this family comedy, which tries to solve the dilemma of changing
priorities, closing the generation gap and “keeping the ties that bind.” We can
all relate to the combustible mixture of guilt, exasperation and love that
comes from being a member of a family. Like Neil Simon's Brighton Beach
Memoirs, Joe DiPietro's autobiographical play touches (and exposes) nerves and
guilt reflexes as well as funny bones.
AVAILABLE ROLES:
NICK: 29-year-old grandson, upwardly mobile executive who morphs into a
defensive child when around his grandparents.
FRANK: 70+, Italian grandfather who came over to America at 14 and who has
lived the rest of his life in Hoboken, New Jersey. Cantankerous, opinionated,
and a retired carpenter.
AIDA: 70+, Frank's wife, born in America and a true earth mother. To her,
food equals love. Both she and Frank are rock-bound to the earth; they take
everything literally.
NUNZIO: 70+, loud, passionate man who lives life fully and at the top of
his voice.
EMMA: 70+, Nunzio's wife, also loud, a big believer in the church who calls
the priest to reserve a mass for any and all family situations. Both Nunzio
and Emma can be dubbed "the Bickersons." arguing with each other at the drop
of a hat.
CAITLIN: 20-something, pretty, brought in by the grandparents as a
potential wife for Nick. Self-assured, Caitlin is the only "normal" character.
Over the River and Through the Woods will be directed by Nancy Wilder.
Performance dates are May 12-14 and 17-21. For additional information, please
contact the director at 438-4303.
