ONCE ON THIS ISLAND – Auditions! ! ! 

Auditions for this vibrant,  timeless myth about the power of love over class 
will be held at Schenectady  Light Opera Company, 826 State Street, 
Schenectady, December 11th & 12th at  7pm. Please prepare 16 bars of a standard 
Broadway show tune and bring your  sheet music.  An accompanist will be provided.  
All auditionees will  participate in a dance audition.  Dress accordingly.  Any

AVAILABLE ROLES (Age 16 and up):
Ti Moune – a native  peasant girl (Soprano II)
Daniel – a wealthy landowner’s son  (Tenor)
Erzulie - Goddess of Love (Alto/Soprano II)
Asaka - Mother of the  Earth (Alto/Soprano II)
Agwe - God of Water (Baritone/Tenor)
Papa Ge -  Demon of Death (Baritone)
Little Ti Moune* - Ti Moune as a young girl of 6-8  (Soprano II)
Mama Euralie – Ti Moune’s foster mother (Alto)
Tonton Julian  – Ti Moune’s foster father (Tenor)
Armand – Daniel’s father  (Baritone)
Andrea – Daniel’s promised bride (Alto/Soprano II)
Storytellers  – ensemble of dancers, singers and actors who help tell the 
story of Ti  Moune

*No children will be auditioned December 11 or 12th. Once adult  casting is 
complete, we will hold auditions for the role of Little Ti Moune in  mid- to 
late-January

There will be one read through on Monday, December  18th. Rehearsals begin in 
earnest on January 2, 2007. Production dates are March  9-11 and 15-18, 2007. 

This joyous and bittersweet Broadway folk tale is  by Lynn Ahrens and Stephen 
Flaherty, the writers of Seussical and Ragtime. It  premiered on Broadway in 
1990 and received eight Tony nominations, is a jubilant  musical set in the 
Caribbean that will have you dancing in the aisles. Based on  Hans Christian 
Anderson's The Little Mermaid and adapted from Rosa Guy's novel  My Love, My 
Love, the show tells the story of Ti Moune, a peasant girl on a  mythical island 
in the French Antilles where the dark skinned peasants are  oppressed by the 
wealthy class, the Beauxhommes.

Eager for love, young Ti  Moune is constantly daydreaming about what life has 
in store for her. When she  audaciously demands to know her destiny, the Gods 
of water (Agwe), earth  (Asaka), love (Erzulie) and death (Papa Ge) decide to 
"give her what she wants."  They place Daniel, a mulatto son of the 
Beauxhomme, in her path. Of course, he  has just been in a car crash, so she nurses him 
and falls in love. When he goes  back to his family, she defies her parents 
and follows him, becoming his  mistress in the land of the Beauxhommes. What 
happens next is not Disney sweet,  but it’s not as bleak as Anderson's fairy 
tale either. Without giving too much  away, we learn through music and dance that 
Ti Moune's spirit and love reaches  farther than death.

The production staff consists of Laura W. Andruski  (Director), Pat Douglass 
(Musical Director), Melissa Lacijan (Choreographer),  Jodi Gilman and Donna Z. 
Baxter (Co-Producers), Mary Kozlowski (Set Design), Ken  Zarnoch (Lighting 
Design) and Pat Casey (Costumes).
