Gillian is dead. Very, very, very dead. But on the eve of what would
have been her 37th birthday, Gillian's presence (or memory, you decide)
continues to influence the lives of her surviving husband, David, and 16
year old daughter, Rachel. This happens in spite of the ongoing
interventions of Gillian's sister, Esther, and in a lesser way, Esther's
husband, Paul. It is the hope of his in-laws that David will become
attracted to someone other than Gillian, and reenter the "real world" as
they define it. It is not odd that David would seek the advice of his
deceased wife in the midst of these quandaries.
Gillian answers him. Or does she?
A naturalistic, understated acting style will be employed. Actors will
be urged to bring as much of themselves into the characters as possible
to create a rich history of being. The yet to be announced rehearsal
schedule will be three nights a week for five weeks, three hours a
night, probably off site, for a period of five weeks. Performance
dates will be the last weekend in October or the first weekend in
November. There will be two evening performances, one on Friday and one
on Saturday night and an afternoon matinee on Sunday. Early auditions
are for the cast to have adequate time for line memorization, which is a
must in a realistic style performance. The director will guide you in
ways to do this, and in ways to make your performance utterly believable
to both the audience . . . and you. Actors will be urged to offer their
own suggestions for their characterizations, in conjunction with the
director, so a unified interpretation is achieved.
The cast of characters:
David -- 37, a college professor, temporarily retired
Rachel -- 16, David and Gillian's daughter
Cindy -- 16, Rachel's friend, quite mature
Paul -- 38, David's brother-in-law, married to Esther
Esther -- 39, David's sister-in-law, a psychologist, married to Paul
Kevin -- 28, a female friend of Paul and Esther, recently divorced
Gillian -- 35, David's former wife, died in a sailing accident two years
prior to the events of the play. Esther's sister.
Consideration in casting is more about how old you can look, rather than
how old you really are, and the type of personality you can project.
Readings will be from the play.
