Auditions for SCP’s first production of its 80th season, Waiting for Godot
by Samuel Beckett, will take place on Tuesday, June 5 and Thursday, June 7 at
the Playhouse, 12 S. Church St., Schenectady, NY 12305. Registration for
auditions begins at 7:00 p.m. each night.
The plot of Samuel Beckett's Waiting for Godot is simple to relate. Two
tramps are waiting by a sickly looking tree for the arrival of M. Godot. They
quarrel, make up, contemplate suicide, try to sleep, eat a carrot and gnaw on
some chicken bones. Two other characters appear, a master and a slave, who
perform a grotesque scene in the middle of the play. A young boy arrives to say
that M. Godot will not come today, but that he will come tomorrow. The play
is a development of the title, Waiting for Godot. He does not come and the
two tramps resume their vigil by the tree, which between the first and second
day has sprouted a few leaves, the only symbol of a possible order in a
thoroughly alienated world.
Many ingenious theories have been advanced to provide satisfactory
interpretations for the characters of Beckett's play. Religious or mythical
interpretations prevail. The two tramps Estragon (Gogo) and Vladimir (Didi) may be
Everyman and his conscience. The most obvious interpretation of Godot is that he
is God. The play is theatre of the absurd.
AVAILABLE ROLES
(Estragon) Gogo (age unimportant) is the less confident tramp, and at one
moment is ready to hang himself.
(Vladimir) DiDi (age unimportant) is the more hopeful, philosophical
tramp. He is the one who keeps reminding them what they are waiting for.
Pozzo (age unimportant) would seem to be the evil master, the exploiter.
But perhaps he is Godot, or an evil incarnation of Godot.
Lucky (age unimportant) is anything but - a slave figure. His part is
played mostly in pantomime, with one long, complex, monologue, reflective of James
Joyce.
Boy (10-13) Has a small but important scene at the end of each act. Would
not require a large time commitment until the end.
Waiting for Godot will be directed by Melissa Brown. Production dates are
October 19, 20, 21 and 24-28. Perusal scripts are available. Volunteers are
needed to help build the set and work backstage. House managers and
hospitality staff are also needed. For more information, contact the director at
370-5828 or email her at mbrown96@ nycap.rr.com.
