“The Boys Next Door”
Directed by Paul Murphy
“The Boys Next Door” is largely a comedic play but with some seri ous, and some very touching parts as well. The play revolves around the lives of four mentally challenged men who live in a group apartment and are supervised by a young man named Jack Palmer, who also supervises four other apartments of similarly challenged individuals. The goal is to “mainstream” the men.
The play employs nine actors: seven men and two women.
One of the male actors plays three different male roles. And one of the female actors plays three different female roles.
Auditions will be held at the Ghent Playhouse, Rte.66, Ghent, NY Monday and Tuesday, December 1st and 2nd – 7 PM
Performance dates: January 23, 2009 to February 8, 2009 – Friday and Saturday evenings and Sunday matinee.
Male roles:
Arnold Wiggins – marginal intelligence, a nervous man in his forties.
Lucien P. Smith – African-American, very limited intelligence, about 50.
Norman Bulansky – overweight, sloppy, limited intelligence, maybe 30.
Barry Klemper – above average intelligence in many ways, but hampered by mental problems, schizophrenic, chronic history of institutions, 28.
Jack Palmer – supervisor of the “Boys”, mid-thirties, a wry man.
Mr. Klemper – coarse, poorly dressed, needs a shave, has only one arm, middle-aged.

Mr. Hedges – middle-aged to elderly.
Mr. Corbin – mild-mannered, middle-aged.
Senator Clarke – dignified, middle-aged.
Female roles:
Sheila – overweight, late 20’s/early 30’s, dresses and speaks poorly.
Same actor for the following roles:
Mrs. Fremus – deaf widow, elderly.
Mrs. Warren – cheerful woman in her thirties, possibly a bit older.
Clara – a friend of Sheila’s, no specific age, severely limited.
