Albany Civic Theater will hold auditions for the final show of the season, The Hot L Baltimore, directed by Dan Stott, Monday, February 16th and Tuesday, February 17th, 2009, at Albany Civic Theater, 235 Second Avenue, Albany, N.Y.

Auditions begin at 7 p.m. both evenings.

We are looking for 8 men, ages 17-70, and 7 women, ages 18-75.

There is no need to prepare a monologue – auditions will consist of cold readings from the script. Note: this is a drama, not a musical.

The Hot L Baltimore will run from April 30 to May 17, 2009.

Description of the play:
The scene is the lobby of a rundown hotel so seedy that it has lost the "e" from its marquee. As the action unfolds, the residents, ranging from young to old, from the defiant to the resigned, meet, talk and interact with each other during the course of one day. The drama is of passing events in their lives, everyday encounters and the human comedy. In the resulting mosaic each character emerges clearly and perceptively defined, and the sum total of what they are—or wish they were—becomes a poignant, powerful call to America to recover lost values and to restore itself in its own and the world's eyes. The Hot L Baltimore was the winner of a New York Drama Circle Award, an Obie Award and an Outer Critics Circle Award.

Character descriptions:

Jamie (17-20) Pale, small, wiry. A little slow; alert, but not quick. Always listening to his sister Jackie, yet clearly passive. Possibly abused.
Paul Granger III (18-25) A student, anxious, belligerent, speaks and moves sporadically. A tenor.

Pizza Delivery Man (18-50)
Cab Driver (20-60)
A John (20-50)
Bill Lewis (25-35) The hotel night clerk. Large-featured, well built in a beefy way, handsome, not aggressive - in fact, he has trouble expressing his feelings, clumsy yet friendly. A baritone.
Mr. Katz (30–40) The hotel manager. Firm and wary, and at times more than a little weary.
Mr. Moore (60-70) Craggy with a creaky voice, moves slowly but there is an underlying energy and sense of outrage.
Girl (18–25) A call girl, light, blond, sexy, extremely curious, romantic, energetic, and perhaps a bit obsessive-compulsive.
Jackie (25-30) Jamie’s sister. Her manner, voice, stance are those of a young dockworker.
Suzy (25–35) A prostitute. A hopeless romantic, yet hard as nails.
April Green (30–55) A prostitute. An experienced, blunt, larger woman, who has a beautiful face, and a mellow alto laugh.
Mrs. Oxenham (40–60) Hotel day clerk, firm and quick speaking.
Mrs. Bellotti (45–60) Mother of a former tenant with a round and thin voice. Complains to get her way, a whining fighter. A sigher.
Millie (65–75) A retired waitress with good carriage and a lovely voice. She is elegant, spiritual, and yet a bit off.
