Guidelines for musical auditions:
1. Prepare 16+ bars of a Broadway show tune. (Some directors will let
you sing a whole verse.) Bring your own sheet music.
2. Pick something that showcases YOUR voice.
3. Select a piece that is similar to the style of musical you are
auditioning for. If you are auditioning for a Rodgers and Hammerstein, don’t
sing a Stephen Swartz tune.
4. Sing something you’re very familiar with. If possible, sing
something you've performed before in front of an audience. Try to avoid singing
something new. Remember, you’re trying to increase your comfort level.
5. Rehearse your song with an accompanist before the audition and
rehearse often. Remember the first "rule" of any audition -- "Prepare.
Prepare. Prepare."
6. Unless you can "nail it", avoid singing a song from the show.
Unless you can meet the director's/musical director's expectations, this could
be a potentially risky choice. Unfortunately, some director's require
you to sing a song from a show. If that is the case, see the last sentence
of #5.
7. Avoid singing a Stephen Sondheim song; most accompanists are not
prepared to sight-read Sondheim. It's a bear! If you're determined to sing
a Sondheim piece, bring your own accompanist.
8. Warm up your voice before the vocal audition. Bring water to
drink during the audition.
9. And if you make a flub – forget about it! There are other aspects
to the audition besides the vocal part.
10. Finally, SMILE! Sell your song and ultimately yourself.
