Announcing Open Auditions for our October ‘09 production of Kander & Ebb’s 

Curtains

Director – Steve Coats (HMT’s CABARET)

Musical Director – Richard Cherry * Choreographer – Ava Conoval

(both from HMT’s production of HOW TO SUCCEED
)

When:  Monday & Tuesday – May 4 & 5      

Time:  Monday: 6:30pm to 8:30pm  *  Tuesday: 7:30pm – 9:30pm

Where: At the Spa Little Theater

What to prepare:   Prepare sixteen bars of a Broadway song and bring sheet
music for the accompanist.  You may be asked for a short section of a
contrasting song as well.  You will also work with the choreographer and may
read scenes at the open call or callback.  Please dress to move.  Please
bring a current resume and photo.  Photos cannot be returned.

CHARACTER DESCRIPTIONS:

 

LIEUTENANT FRANK CIOFFI (30 – 45) A detective who is also a musical theatre
aficionado.  Aside from being exceptionally good at his job, he has also
aspired to be a musical theatre performer his entire life.  He falls
head-over-heels for Niki. Vocal Range Ab – E.  

 

NIKI HARRIS (20s-early 30s)  Pretty, naïve ingénue.  Niki is a chorus
girl/understudy in the show-within-the-show during its Boston tryout.  She
wants to make it big on Broadway.  She falls for Detective Cioffi who is
investigating a murder at the theatre. Actress must have legit Soprano and
good comic timing. Soprano C – E.  

 

GEORGIA HENDRICKS (30s)  Female half of our songwriting team.  Hasn’t
performed in a while but she ends up taking on the leading lady role upon
the demise of the Star.  She must sing and dance well. G – E.   

 

CARMEN BERNSTEIN (45-60) Brassy Broadway producer who runs the show.  A
feisty broad with laser eyes and a sharp tongue. She is a terrific comedic
actress who sings well. Low Eb – E.  

 

AARON FOX (30 -  40s)  The composer of the show-within-the -show.  His
songwriting partner, Georgia, is also his wife from whom he’s separated.
He’s a sexy, charming ladies man. Bb – Gb   

 

SIDNEY BERNSTEIN (late 50s-mid 60s)  The producer of an out of town flop.
Sidney is tough and self-serving.  Actor should have good comic timing.
(doesn’t sing)    

 

CHRISTOPHER BELLING (40-60)  English director.  Very camp.  Very funny.
Requires a good comic lead actor.  (One song) B – E.   

 

BAMBI BERNET (Early 20’s-early 30s)  Chorus performer and much harassed
daughter of Carmen, the lead producer. Longs to be a leading performer.
Many think she was only hired because of her mother.  Bambi is a good
dancer/comedienne who sings well. C – C.  

 

DARYL GRADY (30s)  A theatre critic for a Boston newspaper, he enjoys using
the power he has to make or break shows during their out of town tryouts.
Thinks pretty highly of himself.  (no singing)  

 

JOHNNY HARMON (40s-50s)  Male or female Stage Manage r of the
show-within-the-show.  Johnny is a character actor who is gruff but lovable
and keeps the company in line and on their toes. (small amount of singing)  

 

OSCAR SHAPIRO (45-60) The general manager.  He is an agreeable if somewhat
anxious man.  He is always looking for any angle to find money.  Requires a
good comic actor who sings. Bb – E.   

 

BOBBY PEPPER (20s to early 30s)  The choreographer and lead dancer.  He is a
strong singer who dances well.  Plays Rob Hood in the show-within-the-show.
A – E.  

 

JESSICA CRANSHAW (30s-40s)  A fading Hollywood star.  This is a brief but
swell role.  She lives and dies a diva.  She is a character singer and a
forgetful actress who stars in the show-within-the-show, unfortunately, she
dies on opening night, page 5! G – D.   

 

SASHA ILJINSKY The show’s pit conductor.  He/She sings the opening song in
Act II and leads the orchestra. B – C. 

 

ENSEMBLE ROLES:  Five to seven men and five to seven women who play the
actors under investigation for the murder(s). They all appear in the
show-within-the-show which is seen ‘in performance’ and ‘rehearsal’ and
during Cioffi’s ‘rewrites’.  This is a group of singing, dancing, acting
performers who are crucial to the production.  Good movers with various
ranges of voice.
