Auditions for Rebecca will take place on Tuesday, June 2, and Thursday,
June 4, at 7:30 P.M. at the Playhouse, 12 S. Church St., Schenectady, NY
12305. Sign-up is at 7:15 P.M. The production will be directed by Tom
Heckert.
Rebecca, based on the novel and original play adaptation by Daphne du
Maurier, tells the story of Maxim deWinter’s second wife slowly piecing
together her husband’s tragic and unhappy past married to Rebecca – a beautiful
but treacherous figure that still haunts the family estate of Manderley to
this day. The story is rich with romance and gothic thrills and was
Alfred Hitchcock’s first Hollywood movie, starring Joan Fontaine and Lawrence
Olivier. This production will strive to keep the “film noir” quality of the
movie and re-tell Ms. Du Maurier’s story retaining all the rich, fully
drawn characters of the novel.
Character Descriptions
Maxim deWinter – aged 35-50. Melancholy master of Manderley. Handsome,
well mannered, and widowed just over a year, he returns to the family
manor re-married to the second Mrs. deWinter. Eager to start his life anew
with his bride, he is still linked to Manderley by duty, history and memories
– both good and bad – of his former life and lord of the manor.
Mrs. de Winter – aged 20 – 30. New mistress of Manderley, arriving for
the first time from abroad with her new husband. Shy, unsophisticated, and
a former lady’s maid, she is ill at ease with her new status. Deeply in
love with Maxim, all she desires is to please him and live up to his
standards. She relies on the advice of others on how to be the new mistress,
often with disastrous results.
Mrs. Danvers – Aged 45 to 60. Housekeeper of Manderley and lifelong lady
’s maid (and possibly lover?) to Rebecca, Maxim’s first wife. Organized
and ever so even-keeled about everything, Mrs. Danvers wishes to continue
household operations in the same manner as the previous mistress did – at
all costs. The malicious and obsessed Mrs. Danvers was devoted to Rebecca
in life – as well as now after her death – and will resort to anything to
keep Rebecca’s memory alive.
Giles Lacy – Aged 40 – 60. Brother-in-law of Maxim. Devoted to his
wife and provides much needed information to Mrs. deWinter about the history
of Manderley.
Beatrice Lacy - aged 40 – 60. Older sister to Maxim. Has a very close
relationship with her brother and wishes to see him happy.
Frank Crawley - Aged 30 to 45. In charge of running the estate of
Manderley and close friend to Maxim.
Jack Favell - Aged 25 – 40. Cousin to Rebecca, handsome, dashing, and
charming – somewhat of a cad. Stalks around the house when Maxim is not
around – he reveals information about Rebecca that no one could have known.
Colonel Julian – Aged 50 and up. In charge of the investigation
surrounding Rebecca’s death.
William Tabb – Aged 30 and up. Boatsmith. Built and serviced the boat
Rebecca sailed. Called to Manderley to be questioned during the inquest.
Frith – Aged 40 – 60. Butler to Manderely. Keeps the household staff
organized. Provides important exposition to Mrs. deWinter.
Housekeepers and other servants of Manderley - These roles are
non-speaking and will require only limited rehearsal time. May also be asked to
assist with scene changes and as dressers if necessary.
Proper British accents will be used for most characters. Some working
class characters accents may be adjusted to fit the character’s status.
Accents will be requested at audition but not necessary – just do the best you
can.
Production dates are October 16 – 25, 2009. Scripts and further
information are available from the director, Tom Heckert, by contacting him at
877-6777 or by email at Tomh823 at aol.com.
