Auditions
for Albany Civic Theater's third show of the 2010-2011 season, Proof by David Auburn, directed by Aaron
Holbritter, will be held Monday, November 8 and Tuesday, November 9, 2010 (with
callbacks, if necessary, to be held Wednesday, November 10, 2010) at Albany
Civic Theater, 235 Second Avenue, Albany, NY, 462-1297,

Proof runs February 11-27, 2011.

 

Sign-ins
begin at 7pm both evenings and auditions begin at 7:30pm; there is no need to
make an appointment. There is no need to prepare a monologue; auditions will
consist of cold readings from the script. We are looking for 2 women (one able
to play age 25, one able to play age 29) and two men (one able to play age 28
and one able to play in the 50-70 year old range.) 

 

Synopsis:

 

On
the eve of her twenty-fifth birthday, Catherine, a troubled young woman, has
spent years caring for her brilliant but unstable father, a famous
mathematician. Now, following his death, she must deal with her own volatile
emotions; the arrival of her estranged sister, Claire; and the attentions of
Hal, a former student of her father's who hopes to find valuable work in the
103 notebooks that her father left behind. Over the long weekend that follows,
a burgeoning romance and the discovery of a mysterious notebook draw Catherine
into the most difficult problem of all: How much of her father's madness—or
genius—will she inherit?

 

Available
roles:

 

Catherine (25): Catherine is, above
all else, a highly intelligent individual. 
Owing to this, as well as significant social isolation, she has trouble
relating to other people. She is distrustful and easily agitated, and uses a
vicious wit and sarcasm as a defense mechanism. She takes great comfort in the
absolute nature of mathematics, and fears descending into the same madness that
consumed her father’s mind.

 

Claire (29): Claire is, above all
else, a self preservationist. Having left her sister to be their father’s
caretaker to pursue a life in New
  York, she justifies her absence by offering
significant financial support. She has not inherited any of her father’s
mathematical talent, which Claire links inextricably to her father’s madness.
Claire obsessively craves control and excels at dismissing what she does not
want to accept.

 

Hal (28): Hal is an aspiring
mathematician grappling with the reality that at 28, his best years are already
behind him. He senses the final gasping breath of his adolescence and wonders
what, if any, mark he’ll make in his chosen field. He’s somewhat “nerdy” but is
sweetly disarming and while he may believe himself to be unwaveringly honest,
his desire for self-preservation may lead him down an ethically murky path.

 

Robert (50-70): Robert, when
lucid, is a brilliant man, a logical thinker and a decent father.  While certainly an academic, he exudes a
“regular Joe” amicable personality who likes college sports and challenging
young minds. In the grip of his madness, he tries desperately to remain
connected, but his inability to process complexity leaves him prone to
graphomania (compulsive writing) and angry outbursts.
