Will be holding auditions for:

The Witch of Prague

September 13 and14, 2011 from 6-9 pm.

 Emanuel Friedens Church
 218 Nott Terrace
 Schenectady, NY  12307

Production dates:  November 10, 11, 12, 18, 19, 20 at the Capital Region Arts Center in Troy.  This play is the recipient of a Pepsi  Refresh grant and is based on the novel of the same name by F. Marion Crawford.

Those wishing to audition are advised to look through the website: witchofprague.com to read the synopsis of the play and a description of the characters.  At the auditions, excerpts of the script will be read; candidates will be at an advantage if they know a bit about the story and the characters.  Candidates also should be aware that the play will be held at a location where they will be rather intimate with the audiences; therefore, nuance and subtlety will matter, while overacting is discouraged.

Character breakdown:

Urnorna: (f).  19-30.  A self confident witch , used to having her way with men.  She goes through an emotional roller coaster upon meeting the Wanderer, a man who does not give in to her.  Throughout the play, she will exhibit a range of emotions, including anger, love, despair and frustration.  It is a sensual role, a character who will at times be physical with the actors.  The actress should be advised to make her character likeable, even if not all of her behaviors are likeable.   She is a complex, multi-dimensional character.   Should look healthy, vibrant and feminine.

The Wanderer: (m). 24-30.  He enters Prague in search of his long-lost love Beatrice.  He is a very understated character, detached at times.  Athletic build preferred.

Keyork Arabian: (m).  Cynical, philosophical, at times arrogant.  And yet, oddly likeable.  Has the most wordy lines in the play.  At times Keyork will profess his love for Unorna, so should also have  a romantic side. The book says he is elderly, short and Arab, but we are open to people who are not those things trying out.  It’s more about conveying the character than about the physical role.

Sletchnia Axenia: (f). 18-25.   A reserved and understated character.  She is Unorna’s assistant.  At times, she conveys her own philosophical messages.  Preferably somebody who resembles Beatrice.  Should look healthy and feminine.

Israel Kafta: (m) 18-24.  A brash young man.  He loves Unorna, despite her indifference towards him.  Must display the kinds of emotions one goes through when in such a situation, including frustration, desperation and despair.  Should also be able to display nervousness.

Beatrice: (f).  18-25.  High maintenance young woman, who is trying to elude the Wanderer at all costs.  Bitchy.  Preferably somebody who resembles Sletchnia.  Should look healthy and feminine.

The Sleeper: (m).  Will spend most of the play lying down, only to sit up on two occasions, one to talk, the other to choke out Beatrice.  Should be tall.  The book says 100 years old, but we will work with somebody younger if we cannot find anyone who fits that.

Sister Paul: (f).  No particular age.  A mild-mannered nun.
